José de Jesús Rodríguez, better known as “Camarón” has had a very successful career, playing at the most important Web.com and PGA tournaments, representing Mexico in every shot. Now, Rodríguez keeps growing professionally and we’re proud to welcome him as Cancun Golf Events ambassador.
From humble beginnings to Mexican icon.
José de Jesús “El Camarón” Rodríguez, had to go through great difficulties during his childhood before becoming a professional in 2007. He was born in Irapuato, México, and as a child used to work picking corn near a local golf course. When he turned 12, he dropped out of school to become a full-time caddie at the Santa Margarita Golf Club, where he got to see the sport first hand and fell in love with it.
At age 15, José crossed illegally into the USA and worked for years at the Fayetteville Golf Club in Arkansas as a part of the maintenance team. In 2006 he went back to his hometown with his family, taking back his job as a caddie at the Santa Margarita Golf Club. There, he met Alfonso Vallejo Esquivel, who recognized his talent and offered to pay Rodríguez a membership to the club, the spark that started his career as a professional. From that point on, he has won the México tour 21 times, became the leading money winner at the PGA Latin America and has represented México worldwide, achieving important victories in USA, Canada, Colombia and Paraguay.
With strong performances at the Desert Classic and the Farmer’s Insurance Open, 2019 seems promising for “El Camarón.”
